The Truth About Root Canal Therapy
Dental Anxiety Is Normal—But Root Canals Aren’t Scary
Dental anxiety is perfectly normal, and it’s understandable if you’re afraid of root canal therapy. However, root canal therapy has many benefits that make it worth overcoming the initial fear.
Root Canals: One of the Most Beneficial Procedures
At Thousand Oaks Dental, we understand root canals may not be your favorite procedure. But we’re here to share why it’s one of the most beneficial treatments we offer. Let’s debunk the myths and explore how it protects your oral health.
Root Canal Therapy Saves Your Natural Tooth
The most important benefit of a root canal is that it can save your natural tooth. If your tooth is decayed or infected, your alternatives are extraction or a filling, which may not last. It removes the infected pulp, cleans the canal, and strengthens the tooth with a crown—preserving your smile.
It Relieves Dental Pain Effectively
An infected or inflamed tooth pulp can cause severe, persistent pain. Root canal therapy is specifically designed to eliminate that discomfort. With modern techniques and local anesthesia, you’ll stay comfortable throughout the procedure and only feel mild soreness afterward.
It Supports Your Overall Health
Delaying treatment can lead to tooth loss, gum disease, or jawbone damage. Getting a root canal helps protect not just your teeth, but your entire body. It prevents harmful bacteria from spreading and reduces the risk of more serious infections.
It’s a Long-Lasting Solution
A properly performed root canal can last over ten years—or even a lifetime with good oral hygiene. It offers a permanent fix to the pain and problems caused by tooth infection, restoring function and comfort to your smile.
What Is the Process?
We can provide it in one visit, and you can be on your way to dental health with a fully restored tooth in no time. First, Dr. Thompson and her team will consult with you to determine if root canal therapy or another of our dental services is right for you.
If root canal therapy is the best treatment for your needs, we’ll start by administering anesthesia to maximize your comfort during the procedures. Then, using specialized dental instruments, we’ll drill a tiny hole in the tooth to reach the tooth’s interior. Through this access point, we’ll remove the infected tooth pulp. We’ll clean and disinfect the interior root canal and fill the remaining space with a specialized dental resin called gutta-percha.
You’ll feel no pain during the procedure, and thanks to the root canal therapy, you’ll feel no pain in the treated tooth ever again. It is normal to experience swelling and discomfort after the procedure, but we’ll provide helpful instructions so you can ensure a speedy recovery.
During your recovery period, eat soft foods (and nothing too hot!), and plan on taking it easy for a day or two. Try not to bite down on anything using the treated tooth, and let us know if you experience any excessive pain, swelling, or bleeding.
