What is Periodontitis?
Your gums are susceptible to infection that can cause tooth loss and put your health at risk. Periodontitis or gum disease is a type of infection that not only affects the gums and teeth, but the bacteria associated with this disease can put you at risk for other health problems. More than half of adults over thirty have some form of periodontitis. At Thousand Oaks Dental, we help prevent, treat and reverse the effects of periodontitis with periodontal care.
Periodontitis is a progressive disease. It starts with the accumulation of bacteria, leading to plaque buildup around teeth and eventually tartar. Tartar and the bacteria associated with it irritate and inflamed the gums, causing them to swell and bleed easily. Eventually the gums begin to recede from the teeth and infection takes hold. Left untreated, the infection can cause a breakdown within the jaw bone and connective tissues causing teeth to become loose or even fall out. The bacteria from the infection can enter the bloodstream and put you at risk for type 2 diabetes, pregnancy issues, pancreatic cancer, cardiovascular problems and stroke.
How are Gum Infections Treated?
To treat the infection associated with periodontitis, the bacteria and tartar must be removed from around the teeth and gums. Deep cleanings are the first step in removing anything that can further this infection. In some cases, the cleanings must be done below the gum line with scaling or root planing. Medications and special mouthwash along with excellent oral hygiene between professional treatments can help the gums heal and stop the infection.
